AMERICAN MUSICAL SALUTE TO ARIZONA, Statewide | The American Musical Salute is a patriotic themed program that has been in existence for 20 years. This program will feature youth bands, choirs and orchestras from all 50 states in a year-long tribute to Arizona, commemorating her past and celebrating her future. (January – December 2012)
ARIZONA’S JUBILEE JAMBOREE, Phoenix | During the month of February 2012, all 17 Phoenix Public Library branches will bring to life stories that feature the amazing geography, unique plants and animals, and wonderful people of our state. To further celebrate Arizona’s Centennial, storytimes during the week of the 13th through the 18th will have a birthday theme, and families will be encouraged to participate by singing Happy Birthday to Arizona. Colorful bookmarks will be available at all library locations, and they will highlight additional children’s books which celebrate Arizona’s heritage. (February 1-29, 2012)
ARIZONA QSO PARTY, Worldwide | Amateur radio operators in the state of Arizona contact as many operators world-wide during a 24 hour contest period spreading the news about the centennial. Awards are given to operators in AZ who contact the most people. (October 8-9, 2011 | October 13-14, 2012)
ARIZONA TRAIL CENTENNIAL ADVENTURE, | The Arizona Trail Centennial Adventure is to celebrate our state’s 100th birthday by enjoying many beautiful Arizona outdoor areas and out state’s communities, flora, fauna and history. The goal is for the many different groups to traverse a section of the Arizona National Scenic Trail and in so doing, traverse the entire 800+ mile trail within the six week event time frame. (September 15 – October 31, 2011)
AZ AUTHORS CENTENNIAL WRITING CONTEST, Statewide | The Arizona Authors Association has run a writing contest for 30 years and, in 2011, the contest will honor the Centennial by creating a special category for stories on Arizona by Arizona residents. Contest winners will be awarded a monetary prize and publication in the 2011 Arizona Literary Magazine – Centennial Edition. (January – July, 2011)
AZ CENTENNIAL MOMENT OF STATEHOOD BELL COMMUNITY RINGING, Sedona | A celebratory bell ringing for Arizona’s 100th Birthday! Dignitaries, professional bell-ringers music, refreshments, 2:14 pm simultaneous community-wide ringing of bells including “Sedona’s bell’ which hangs in the steeple at Wayside Chapel. A public birthday party is to follow the bell ringing. (February 14, 2012)
AZCA CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS| The Leadership Team of Arizona’s Children Association has committed itself to hosting a series of twenty-one (21) Arizona’s Children Centennial Celebration receptions across Arizona during 2011-2012. Each reception will be two hours in length with an “open house” format. All receptions will be free and open to the public. (March 10, 2011 – May 7, 2012)
CELEBRATING ARIZONA’S INFLUENCERS, Phoenix | Leading up to Arizona’s Centennial in 2012, The Stockyards will host a series of private events for honorees, thanking them for their impact on the history and future of Arizona. To commemorate each honoree’s Arizona legacy, The Stockyards also will dedicate a temporary booth in his/her name along with a plaque featuring historical photographs and press pieces. HASHKNIFE PONY EXPRESS, Holbrook, Payson, Scottsdale |Every year, Arizonans gather to honor the days when mail was delivered the old fashioned way – by horse. The 54th Annual Hashknife Pony Express ceremonial trail begins in Holbrook, stops in Payson, and ends in Scottsdale, delivering first class mail along the way. (February 7-10, 2012)
HISTORIC ROUTE 66 FUN RUN | Approximately 900 vintage vehicle, and thousands of spectators from all over the world come to Northern Arizona to celebrate the history of Route 66. Activities take place in every community from Seligman to Topock/Golden along this longest remaining continuous stretch of the Route including a show & shine in Kingman, a BBQ hosted by the Haulapai Tribe in Peach Springs, gunfights in Oatman, and an award ceremony in Topock. Vintage cars, great entertainment, vendor, and family-friendly activities make this an event that has something for everyone. (May 4-6, 2012)
THE SOUNDS OF STATEHOOD, Tempe| The Sounds of Statehood is a musical story which portrays the history of Arizona from about 1870 to February 14, 1912, culminating with statehood. Using two fictional characters, Mariquita Hernandez and Captain Jesse Wrightson, The Sounds of Statehood depicts the lives of actual, true-to life town founders, such as Judge Charles Hayden and his wife Sallie Hayden of the Hayden Flour Mill in Tempe. Historical events and prominent Arizona pioneers are also brought to life on stage, from areas such as; Flagstaff, The Grand Canyon, Prescott, Jerome, Pinedale and Tucson.
