Just one hour before Prescott Best Fest opens its gates, at approximately 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at the courthouse plaza, the U.S. Postal Service will unveil the art for the highly anticipated Arizona Centennial commemorative stamp.
This is an art unveiling mind you, not the occasion to purchase it yet. Still, the long awaited design, besides having philatelists all aflutter, is expected to reflect the beauty of Arizona in an imagery to be seen the world over. Such unveilings typically grab news headlines and the rapt attention of collectors around the globe.
The commemorative stamp was designed by an as-yet-unnamed Arizona artist who is slated to be revealed at this special ceremony at the historic courthouse as well.
It is expected that the Arizona Centennial commemorative stamp will be highly coveted by collectors because it represents the last of the 48 contiguous states. For that reason, Arizona is often referred to as the “baby state.” Another note of historic significance is that the Arizona Centennial stamp will join the “forever” ranks. Forever stamps can be used to mail a one-ounce letter regardless of when the stamp is purchased or used and no matter how prices may change in the future. The First Issue Arizona Centennial stamp will be available for purchase by the public on Statehood Day – Feb. 14, 2012 – at the State Capital in Phoenix.
So don’t miss this unveiling. The stamp and the festive occasion truly is Arizona history. Still in the making.
