Arizona to unveil new centennial stamp

The artwork selected for next year’s U.S. commemorative postage stamp honoring Arizona’s centennial will be unveiled Sept. 16 at the AZ Best Fest at the courthouse plaza in downtown Prescott.

A giant reproduction of the design for the new stamp will be unveiled by Secretary of State Ken Bennett along with newly-appointed Prescott Postmaster Frank Watson during a brief ceremony. They will be joined by the artist who created the stamp artwork, Ed Mell of Phoenix. Watson also will announce next year’s official date of issuance for the new commemorative stamp following the unveiling.
The public is invited to attend the event, which kicks off a weekend festival of concerts, activities and food booths to begin the celebration of Arizona’s centennial.
Arizona was officially welcomed as the 48th State in the Union on Feb. 14, 1912, when President William H. Taft signed the statehood legislation.
